After a grueling battle, Tirek can see that he and Twilight Sparkle are engaged in a stalemate. So to quicken things a bit, Tirek pulls the hostage card. Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Applejack, Spike, and Discord are suspended helplessly in the air as Tirek gives his proposal.

All the magic she possesses, for her friends' lives. At that point, Twilight gets her rainbow inspiration...
